Independence Day Celebrating Liberty
Independence Day proper comes around each 4th of July. We come together as families, friends, neighbors and Americans. Thinking about what it means to have independence on a national level is awe inspiring. Considering it on an individual basis, turns out in-home care enables folks, senior older adults in particular to remain independent in their homes. Home Care services help people enjoy their independence every day.
Many people benefit from having a few hours a week of assistance with household chores such as: shopping, laundry, changing the linen, light housekeeping and transportation. Others require more personal care with hygiene and mobility particularly for safety reasons.
Senior Centers Improve Quality of Life
Another key feature of having an aide or companion a few times a week, or round the clock, if needed is the social contact of interacting with another human being. One on one attention can do wonders when recuperating from an illness or hospitalization. If such a small amount of interaction can make a difference, imaging what attending group activities or programs can do? It is well known from endless studies that people who interact with others have fewer physical complaints and experience less depression and anxiety. Participation is a plus but not as essential as attendance. Here in Palm Beach county Florida, there are so many Senior Centers and activities to choose from. There are exercise classes, spiritual programming, and Adult Continuing Education courses, Health and Wellness, Support Groups, Games etc. You can find different programs at Senior Centers, Temples, Churches, YMCAs, and JCCs and on University campuses. Independence of choice and interest abound, even if you have someone provide the transportation for you to get there.
Many folks will explore activities independently or go with a friend. More skeptical seniors may need not just encouragement from family members, but a chaperone to a few events as well. So, all of you adult sons and daughters, whether in Florida or out of state, research and plan on going to a class or program next time you visit your parents. Help jump start their independence to explore and meet other people in a safe environment.
